Nartanam - Vol V No. 2

A Quarterly Journal of Indian Dance - Volume V - Number 2 - April to June 2005

29th April 1982, is a landmark date in the history of dance, as this was the day that the International Dance Council ((Conseil International de la Danse - CID) had declared as International Dance Day and has since been celebrated every year by dance events all over the world. The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727 - 1810), the creator of modern ballet.

Based in Paris, CID was founded in 1973 and is affiliated to UNESCO. The prime objective of this worldwide organization is to bring together international, national and local organizations and individuals and to represent the interests of dance. Yet another aim is to increase awareness of the importance of dance among the general public, as well as to persuade governments all over the world to provide a proper place for dance in all systems of education, from primary to higher. This year's focus was on primary education and guidelines were sent to organize events at the primary level for children to draw or write about dance, collect dance pictures or better still dance!
