Electromagnetic Theory for Newbies

This work is dedicated to Professor H. S. Mani for being mentor, teacher and a friend. This volume, the first one in a series of e-books on Electromagnetic Theory will consist of the following topics in electrostatics.

Physics prerequisites assumed are the topics covered up to Class 12 under NCERT syllabus https://ncert.nic.in/textbook.php.

As far as mathematical prerequisites are concerned, the reader must be comfortable with using vector algebra, differential and integral calculus. Multiple integrals are introduced as the limit of Riemann sums. Knowledge of setting up volume and surface integrals as iterated multiple integrals in Cartesian, cylindrical, plane polar and spherical polar coordinate systems, is not required. We give sufficient details on these topics wherever needed. No extra preparation should be required for these topics.

The electromagnetic theory makes an extensive use of vector calculus. A section on quick reminders of prerequisites is included in every chapter. A companion volume on vector calculus is being made available covering all aspects of vector calculus. Besides the companion volume, the user may consult chapters of mathematical preparation from Feynman Lectures Vol-II and Griffiths’ book on Electrodynamics.
