1918 - Born in Madras, India, May 13 to Jayammal (Mother) and Modarapu Govindarajulu (father) 1923-27 - Dance training begun under Nattuvanar Kandappa Pillai; training in music under Jayammal, Vina Dhanam (grandmother) and Tenmattam Varadachari; abhinaya with Mylapore Gauri Amma and improvisation with Chinnayya Naidu 1927-28 - Arangetram in Kanchipuram at the Ammanakshi temple in Chengazhuneer Odai Street followed by a maiden performance in Madras 1933 - First of yearly concerts in Music Academy, Madras 1933-34 - First improvised performance of “Krishna nee begane” sung by Jayammal at Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Mylapore 1935 - First ever recital of Bharatanatyam in Calcutta for all Bengal Music Conference in the Senate Hall, which was attended by Satyajit Ray 1936 Invited by Uday Shankar to perform in North India 1937 - Performed at Varanasi. Rabindranath Tagore attended the concert. 1938 - Invited to perform at Shaniniketan. 1943 - Birth of her only daughter, Lakshmi; Concert tour of Sri Lanka 1945-48 -
