**Balasaraswati’s Life – A Chronology**
1918 - Born in Madras, India, May 13 to Jayammal (Mother) and Modarapu Govindarajulu (father)
1923-27 - Dance training begun under Nattuvanar Kandappa Pillai; training in music under Jayammal, Vina Dhanam (grandmother) and Tenmattam Varadachari; abhinaya with Mylapore Gauri Amma and improvisation with Chinnayya Naidu
1927-28 - Arangetram in Kanchipuram at the Ammanakshi temple in Chengazhuneer Odai Street followed by a maiden performance in Madras
1933 - First of yearly concerts in Music Academy, Madras
1933-34 - First improvised performance of “Krishna nee begane” sung by Jayammal at Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Mylapore
1935 - First ever recital of Bharatanatyam in Calcutta for all Bengal Music Conference in the Senate Hall, which was attended by Satyajit Ray 1936 Invited by Uday Shankar to perform in North India
1937 - Performed at Varanasi. Rabindranath Tagore attended the concert.
1938 - Invited to perform at Shaniniketan.
1943 - Birth of her only daughter, Lakshmi; Concert tour of Sri Lanka
